What the Class 158 is
The BR Class 158 is a two-car diesel multiple unit (DMU) built by British Leyland between 1984 and 1987. It was designed for regional passenger services across Britain’s railway network and represents a later generation of British Rail DMU technology compared to earlier classes.
In Train Sim World 7, the Class 158 is being developed by Skyhook Games. According to the August 2026 roadmap, it is intended to layer onto the Airedale & Wharfedale route alongside the existing Class 331 and the Deluxe Class 333. This will give Standard edition players additional variety on the Yorkshire core route.
Technical specifications
The Class 158 is a two-car DMU with the following key characteristics:
- Power: Two Rolls-Royce C3 Ten diesel engines, each producing approximately 560 hp
- Transmission: Mechanical automatic transmission (Perilli-bot) providing smooth acceleration
- Speed: Maximum speed of 90 mph (145 km/h)
- Formation: Standard two-car formation with driving cabs at both ends
- Capacity: Seating for approximately 138 passengers in standard and first class
The Class 158 was built to replace older DMU types on regional services and operated across much of Britain’s rail network before many units were displaced by diesel multiple units and later electrification programmes.

Skyhook Games is developing the Class 158 as a layering option for Airedale & Wharfedale. The intention is to add it alongside the existing Northern Class 331/0 and 331/1 units that come with the Standard edition, as well as the Deluxe Class 333 fishbowl EMU.

- Regional stopping service character with different acceleration and braking

How it fits the Airedale & Wharfedale roster

- LNER Class 801 Azuma (express overlay)
- Class 66 with HYA limestone hoppers (freight)
Deluxe edition adds:
- Class 333 fishbowl EMU (Northern)
The Class 158 from Skyhook Games will add:
- An additional DMU option with different driving characteristics
- More timetable variety for Airedale operations
- A bridge between EMU and locomotive-hauled freight operations
