Train Sim World 7 Controls

Beginner controls are the new default on-ramp in Train Sim World 7. They strip cab setup so you can set direction, notch power, brake, work doors, and blow the horn without hunting a key on the desk. Immersive controls remain for drivers who want AWS, PZB, combined handles, and every switch. This page is the binding sheet. The longer tutorial lives in simplified controls. New players should still walk getting started before a live timetable.

Train Sim World 7 is single-player. Bindings below are for one pad or one keyboard. Full launch is 15 September 2026. Deluxe and Ultimate editions open early access from 10 September 2026, which is when those SKUs can test the new layout in the real client.

Dovetail also calls the feature Simplified Controls. In Settings it sits under Controls. You can pick Beginner during first-time setup or toggle it later. All trains use simplified physics and sound while the mode is on.

Beginner bindings

At launch, beginner controls work in Timetable and Free Roam. If you load a mode that does not support them, the game warns you and asks for immersive controls.

Console cameras use the right stick to look and R3 / RS click to cycle. Zoom is the left stick on pads and the mouse wheel on PC. Cab options on PlayStation Square or Xbox X open a simplified HUD; on PC you click the HUD instead of a dedicated key.

Keyboard throttle on A and D looks backwards if you expect WASD strafing. In the seat, W and S are the reverser, A adds power, and D reduces it. On foot, WASD becomes walk and strafe after you press E.

How a first stop should feel

Sit down with E, Triangle, or Y. Set direction with D-Pad Up or W until the HUD shows Forward. Release brake with L1 / LB / semicolon, then feed throttle with R2 / RT / A. Brake early with L2 / LT / apostrophe; beginner mode still expects a stop at the marker. Open platform-side doors with D-Pad left/right or Y/U, close them, and leave.

Horn is L3, LS click, or Space. Map is Touchpad, View, or 9; hold it on consoles to toggle the schedule. Pause is Options, Menu, or Esc. Open the map before you guess a junction.

Pair beginner mode with the Beginner player-assist preset: auto coupling on, notifications on, AI conductor always handling doors if you want that help. Standard assist uses a realistic conductor. Expert turns the helpers off. Those assist flags are separate from the beginner control toggle, so you can keep simple handles and still switch the conductor later.

When to leave beginner mode

Stay on beginner controls until you can stop a Northern Class 331 on Airedale and Wharfedale without overrunning, or hold a Tri-Rail BL36PH into a Florida platform without a second brake grab. Then turn the toggle off and learn the real cab for that traction.

Immersive mode is required for modes that beginner controls do not support, and it is the better teacher for Deluxe traction. ICE 4, Class 333, and GP49H-3 have desks worth learning; see Deluxe locomotives. Safety systems can sit on by default in Train Sim World 7 if you enable that setting, which matches taking over a prepared train.

Freight Hauler uses Free Roam-style driving, so beginner bindings work on the core routes. If a prompt tells you to swap, swap.

Pads, keyboards, and hardware

A DualSense, Xbox pad, or keyboard is enough for beginner mode. RailDriver and third-party desks belong to immersive layouts.

On PC, open Settings > Controls > Keyboard Controls after the first run. Several European layouts move apostrophe and semicolon; if brake and throttle feel swapped, reset the preset. Console players should check Gamepad Settings for vibration, camera shift holds, and the train bell toggle used on US diesels.
