Train Sim World 7 Game Modes
What each menu tile is for, and which ones beginners should open first.
Pick a tile with intent
Train Sim World 7 still offers the series’ usual ways to play, plus a new freight sandbox. Full launch is 15 September 2026. Deluxe and Ultimate early access began 10 September 2026. Platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Epic.
If a tile is missing, the add-on is still downloading. Fix that with how to download Train Sim World 7 before you assume the mode was cut. Free Starter only has Training Center. Standard unlocks the three core routes. Deluxe and Ultimate add extra locos and older Deluxe routes as listed on the editions comparison.
Beginner controls work in Timetable and Free Roam at launch. Other tiles expect immersive controls. Settings > Controls is the toggle. Bindings are on the controls reference.
Training Center
The Training Center is the Free Starter map: steam, diesel, and electric modules, junctions, coupling, signals, and a first look at Free Roam tools and the Livery Designer. It is the correct first hour even if you already bought Deluxe. Getting started walks the boot order; this page is about what you play after that.
Journey
Journey is a curated path through a route: introductions, scenarios, and selected timetable services in an order Dovetail chose. It is the guided tour. Use it once per core map — Airedale & Wharfedale, Florida Tri-Rail, Bahnstrecke Nürnberg–Würzburg — then leave it. Journey is not the living railway; it is the brochure that teaches the brochure’s highlights.
First-time setup on Standard difficulty can send you here on purpose. That is fine for night one. It is a poor forever home if you wanted an unscripted day of traffic.
Timetable
Timetable is the 24-hour railway: passenger, freight, and AI traffic on a clock. You pick a diagram and become one service among many. Random faults, temporary speed restrictions, and signal delays can spice a run. Layers add extra traction if you own the matching add-on, including deluxe locomotives such as Class 333, ICE 4, and GP49H-3 on the cores.
This is the mode beginner controls were built for. A Class 331 stopper, a Tri-Rail Rotem set, or a BR 440 regional will teach doors and braking without a scenario prompt. Included traction is listed on standard locomotives.
Live Weather is an option here if you are signed into Dovetail Live. Freight Hauler is not Timetable; do not look for random wagon goals inside a scheduled service.
Conductor
Conductor puts you in the saloon instead of the cab. Check tickets, work the doors, and dispatch. It is slower on purpose. Use it on Yorkshire commuters or Florida double-deck cars when you want the scenery without driving. It is not a beginner-controls mode at launch, and it is not a substitute for learning the desk.
Scenario
Scenarios are hand-built jobs with objectives and prompts. They teach a specific skill or tell a short operational story. Journey already folds many of them into its path. Open Scenario directly when you want one task without the rest of the tour. Treat them as lessons, then return to Timetable.
Free Roam
Free Roam lets you spawn trains, pick a path, and drive with or without mixing into timetable traffic. It is the sandbox for testing a cab, taking screenshots, or running an ad-hoc consist from Formation Designer. Beginner controls work here. It is also how Freight Hauler borrows spawn tools, but Free Roam itself has no “all wagons home” win state.
Livery Designer, Formation Designer, and Scenario Planner sit beside the play modes as creative tools. Sharing those creations through Creators Club needs Dovetail Live. Driving in Free Roam does not.
Freight Hauler
Freight Hauler scatters random freight cars and asks you to take them home. You choose wagon count, time, weather, layers, and whether traffic exists. Completion is “every wagon is in the right place,” followed by a debrief. At launch it only supports TSW7 core routes. Any spawned loco can work. It does not need Dovetail Live. Live Weather does.
Use it after you can read the live map. It is not the second click after Training Center.
A practical order
- Training Center until coupling and doors are not mysteries.
- One Journey pass on Yorkshire.
- Timetable passenger with beginner controls.
- One Scenario if a skill still feels fake.
- Timetable freight or Conductor for variety.
- Free Roam to test a deluxe cab.
- Freight Hauler on a low wagon count.
Compatible content adds more maps to Journey, Timetable, Scenario, and Free Roam when the TSW7 downloads exist. Steam can use that library during early access; consoles wait for full launch. Freight Hauler stays on the cores until Dovetail says otherwise. The Tadami Line will arrive later per the roadmap; it does not change this launch menu.
Route tasks (collectibles) and mastery overlays are optional loops, not modes. Ignore them until the railway itself is fun. PC players can chase Epic, DLSS 4.5, and FSR 4 in graphics settings after a mode is chosen, not before.
The rest of the guides hub assumes you can name these tiles. Use Journey to learn a route once. Use Timetable to live there. Use Freight Hauler when you are tired of passenger clocks. That order is the whole design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Which mode should I play first?
Training Center, then a short Journey or a Timetable stopper on Airedale & Wharfedale. The getting started page sequences that first hour.
Which modes support beginner controls?
Timetable and Free Roam at launch. Journey, Scenario, Conductor, and Freight Hauler expect immersive controls. See simplified controls.
Is Freight Hauler part of Timetable?
No. It is a separate sandbox with random wagons and a debrief. Read the Freight Hauler guide for route limits and spawned locos.
Do I need Dovetail Live for these modes?
Not for Training Center, Timetable, Free Roam, Scenario, Conductor, Journey, or Freight Hauler. Live Weather and Creators Club sharing do require a Live login.
Why is a mode missing from the menu?
The route add-on is still downloading, or you only own Free Starter. Follow how to download Train Sim World 7 and confirm your SKU on the editions page.
