A rebuilt Geep with head-end power
Tri-Rail’s GP49H-3 fleet started life as Norfolk Southern Geeps, rebuilt with head-end power so they could heat and light a passenger consist. Half a dozen entered service in 2006. When the BL36PH arrived they were pushed into maintenance and backup work rather than retired outright. That is the job in Train Sim World 7: deputise on passenger diagrams, then pick up ballast and extra work trains when the railroad needs a rattly four-axle diesel instead of the modern cab.
The model wears Tri-Rail white and blue stripes, not CSX paint. It is not a substitute SD40-2. Passenger, rescue, and work trains sit in scenarios and timetable. Dovetail recorded the real machines in Miami with Tri-Rail; the cab is supposed to feel loose and mechanical next to the BL36PH. Own Florida Tri-Rail or the Deluxe bundle. The GP49H-3 without the Miami–Boca map is a spare engine.
Deluxe and Ultimate include this loco plus five days of early access from 10 September 2026. Full launch is 15 September 2026. After that date, Free Starter owners can buy it as a loco add-on. Backup and supplemental fleet
The passenger layer on Florida Tri-Rail is a standard hourly service through the day. The BL36PH is the primary locomotive. The F40PH-3C covers substitutions. Deluxe players also get the GP49H-3 on those same hourly paths and on two express non-stops. Locomotives always face south. Rotem cab cars work northbound. Unique GP49H-3 ballast trains run in each direction. That is the extra flavour Standard does not have: a four-axle passenger diesel dragging ballast instead of Rotem cars. Depot work fills the gaps. Trains come in and out of service through the day. One Deluxe job even has you switch Rotem cars and make up a formation before entering service; you can do that work with any Tri-Rail equipment, including this Geep.
Do not treat the GP49H-3 as CSX power. Freight on the corridor is the SD40-2 and GP38-2 in Yn3b, plus Dura-Max rock hoppers. The Geep’s HEP rebuild is for passenger heat and light, not for stone trains that belong to CSX. If you want switching, sit the GP38-2. If you want a rattly backup passenger, sit the GP49H-3.
Scenarios: Mic Drop, Support Act, Slo Rida
Three Deluxe scenarios ship with the GP49H-3.
Mic Drop is a facsimile of an audio recording session from a Dovetail research trip to the Tri-Rail facility. It exists because the cab was recorded in Miami, and the brief leans into that trip rather than a clean Airport-to-Boca diagram.
Support Act is a deadhead to collect a failed train and finish its run. That is the backup-fleet job in scenario form: you are the spare engine, not the advertised BL36PH.
Slo Rida is evening rush in torrential rain. Florida weather is the point. Brake earlier than a dry hourly, and remember south-facing locomotives and the red at Metrorail Transfer.
Route-included Standard scenarios still use the BL36PH, F40PH-3C, Rotem cab cars, and CSX pair. The Geep does not steal Welcome to Miami or the hurricane brief.
Cab feel, audio, and first drive
The selling point is the rattle. Dovetail recorded the real GP49H-3s in Miami with Tri-Rail. Expect a looser, more mechanical cab than the BL36PH. HEP equipment is why a rebuilt Geep can still heat a double-deck Rotem consist. If the cab feels too calm, you are probably in the modern passenger diesel.
Do not make this your first Train Sim World 7 cab. Finish getting started and an hourly BL36PH, then take the GP49H-3 on a substitution or a ballast. Leave beginner controls on until the south-facing push-pull is automatic. If Miami suburbs stutter, drop foliage on graphics settings before you drop Medium. Handheld and minimum-spec notes sit on system requirements.
How it sits next to Yorkshire and Bavaria
GP49H-3 is the Florida reason to pick Deluxe, the same way the Class 333 is the Yorkshire reason and ICE 4 is the German reason. If you bought Deluxe only for the Geep, still take one fishbowl on Airedale & Wharfedale and one ICE path on Nürnberg–Würzburg so the three core maps stay a set. Standard already has two passenger diesels and two CSX freight locos. The GP49H-3 is extra passenger and work-train flavour, not the only way to leave Miami Airport. Buy it because you want the rebuilt Geep, the ballast turns, and the three Deluxe scenarios. Drive the BL36PH if you skipped Deluxe.
